How Safe Is Ice Melt Salt?
In the past, ice melt products were very basic and the most common and widely used type was rock salt. It has its advantages, like being fairly inexpensive, but the disadvantages are many. The main problems are that rock salt is messy to use and apply, the residue tracks everywhere you and gets on everything you touch, and it usually harms the surface you apply it to after only a few applications. You may have experienced driveway or walkway cracking and chipping due to the corrosive nature of inferior sodium chloride (NaCl) ice melters. It can also damage vegetation that may inadvertently be treated while spreading. On the other hand, formulas made with Calcium Chloride and Magnesium Chloride as active ingredients are much less likely to be corrosive and there many dozens of surfaces you can use these ice melt products on without worry of irreversible consequences. These mixtures are also non-irritating and thus less harmful to your hands and skin.
